Wise Counsel From Susan Quilliam: Can a pill give me back my va-va-voom?

Hi Susan

I’m hearing rumours about a new pill that boosts desire for women. I’m struggling at the moment, as I’m working far too hard, under stress, and sex is the last thing on my mind. I haven’t got a live-in partner but do have some friends I sleep with. And it would be great to pop a pill to get in the mood when I meet up with one of my f-buddies. So do you know anything about this pill? And would it suit me?

Lyssie

Hi Lyssie

I’m afraid my answer to your question is a big fat “Dunno” – and for many reasons. First, the pill you’re probably thinking of is still in the research stage in America and so we don’t know precisely what it is, how it works, whether it works and who it’s suitable for. And it’ll be quite a few years before it’s on the market – if it ever is, as the last attempt at creating a pill to raise women’s desire never got went on sale.

Plus, most medications – like the little blue pill for men – are not meant to be aphrodisiacs, but to solve a specific medical condition such as lack of blood flow or imbalanced hormones. So even if this pill does come on sale, it may not be relevant to you unless you have a medical diagnosis.

There’s also deeper issues here. A pill to raise women’s desire may be the wrong solution to the wrong question. Who says that lack of desire is an illness that needs a cure? For many women desire fails because their lifestyle is problematic or their partnership is rubbish – and those things need o be sorted in many other ways than popping a pill.

My advice to you is to sort the overwork. Short-term get more rest and relaxation. Long-term look at the impact your job is having on your life. And yes, watch this space for news of the new pill. But don’t’ get your hopes up that it’ll be helpful to you!
