Wise Counsel From Susan Quilliam: What’s wrong with my penis?

Hi Susan

Quick question. I’ve started getting a lot of pain when I urinate, and some discharge from my penis. Can you tell me what’s wrong and whether there’s any medication I can get. I’ve tried looking this up on the web but there’s no definite answers. I can’t go to my GP because he knows my parents.

Hi Alex

Quick answer. For the same reason as the web isn’t going to give you any definite answers about your symptoms, I can’t give you any definite answers either.

You’ve almost certainly got some sort of genital infection, and there are several possibilities for diagnosis and therefore several possibilities for treatment. Problem is, what you’ve told me almost certainly isn’t enough of a full story for me – or anyone else – to say what’s going on and what to do about it. You could have symptoms you’ve not noticed, ones that only an examination would reveal, or ones that can only be tracked down through tests. It’ll also be vital to get an account of your medical history and your sexual history.

So, even though I know you’re embarrassed, you do need to see a health professional. If you don’t want your GP to know there’s anything wrong, your best bet is to go to the genitourinary clinic at your local hospital. The doctors there have seen everything, and will absolutely not judge you or make you feel bad about your symptoms. They’ll quickly test you, diagnose you, and treat you. So do, do, do go along and get your symptoms seen to.

[Ed: Often you can ask to see a different GP at the same surgery, or you could consider moving GP Surgery altogether. Alternatively, to find a Sexual Health Clinic in the UK you can visit the NHS clinic locator at http://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/STIs/Pages/VisitinganSTIclinic.aspx )
