Michelle Mildenhall is an artist working in unexplored territory: latex artwork.
A self confessed latex fetishist Michelle has been obsessed by rubber since the first time she put it on, “The first time I slipped into latex I felt empowered. It’s such a beautiful material it felt different to anything I’ve ever come across before. It’s sexy, sleek and smells devine and I love wearing it!”. The idea of making artwork out of latex came whilst she was working on an outfit for herself, and with her extensive background in graphic design and textiles it proved an intoxicating flash of inspiration.
She uses a bold graphic style in her Warhol-esque close up character portraits, her inspiration a constant stream of people and characters that inhabit the UK fetish scene. They are charged with eroticism, both in subject and materials. Their presence sexy, aloof and yet firmly present as each one stares back unblinking, daring you to keep on looking.
Her new work has extended into prints, with these 2 portraits of the Queen being popular favourites:
Michelle’s work has been exhibited all over the world, earlier this year her pieces were selected for an exhibition “12 Inches of Sin” in Las Vegas and San Francisco as well as in her home town of Brighton and in London. This autumn her work features at Brighton Arts Club, a hub of alternative art and culture which has featured both home grown and international talent.
Michelle predicts a trend in latex interiors, and is happy to be one of the leading lights in this market, she says ” I hope, that with my twist on using latex in art rather than fashion, my work will appeal not only to a new audience of latex lovers and the more serious latex connoisseurs, but to art lovers too. I’m continuously working on new ideas and I love seeing my work on people’s walls, it gives me a real buzz and inspires me to come up with new and exciting ideas, so watch this space!”
