Event Preview: Shibari With Santi, 8 & 9 November 2014, London

Shibari with Santi

Shibari – Japanese rope bondage – is an unendingly popular form of kink, and these two workshops run by Sacred Pleasures‘ resident rope geek, Santiago Genochio, consistently sell out – so book early. The first day is for beginners, the second for those who have already attended one of Santi’s beginners’ days. Or you can do both in a weekend.

The art of shibari – or ‘kinbaku’, as purists call it – has its roots in feudal Japan, where tying was a martial art, a method of securing prisoners in ways that acknowledged different social statuses. As society changed, it became a performance art with a sexy edge, and that’s how it made its way over to the west. Now it has many devotees in the UK, and no self-respecting fetish club would be without a rope display. A shibari-tied body is considered an art form and the tying itself can be quite a meditative practice.

Rope was my first fetish, but as I’m not much of a Boy Scout I never really thought I would learn how to tie. However, earlier this year I had so many recommendations for Santi’s rope workshops that I thought I’d give his beginners’ one a go. I can wholeheartedly say it was one of the best kink workshops I’ve ever attended. As I’m not particularly technically minded I expected to find the workshop itself a bit dull, and had prepared myself for that, thinking it would be worth it for the chance to tie up pretty people in the future. In fact, the workshop itself was completely absorbing. We were producing beautiful ties very quickly, and it’s amazing how great an ice breaker tying someone’s legs together with a double column bind can be. As is usually the case at Sacred Pleasures, the other participants were lovely people (many of them very pretty) and the atmosphere was safe, relaxed and friendly. Santi teaches in a way that is very easy to retain, while giving you the building blocks to start experimenting and creating your own ties later on. We went away with a mini rope manual to help our future tying and plans to meet for rope practice with other group members. Since that workshop, tying has become a regular part of my sex and social life. I just can’t believe I left it so long before learning!

If you’ve ever liked the thought of being tied up – or of tying someone up – sign up. And if you just fancy being able to pull effortlessly, rope is definitely for you. Turn up at a fetish event with a couple of lengths of synthetic jute*, and rope bunnies will come bounding at you from all directions.

Incidentally, I have my own rope, and am looking for bunnies myself…

Shibari With Santi is at Sacred Pleasures, Manor House, London
