As fans of the Cake concept, which is about providing women with fun, sexy and educational events, we were first in the queue to get our tickets to their most recent event. The invitation was specific about what to wear; lingerie or black - and a mask. Feeling a little 'Eyes Wide Shut', we got ready for the evening.
Now masks aren't exactly on sale at every corner shop so in a nice bit of planning, the organisers had a selection on sale at the door. Even better, it clearly wasn't some dodgy money-making scam. A simple mask was £2 but a full peackock feathered Mardi-Gras style number was only £5. We donned our masks and headed downstairs, discovering en-route that masks plus heels are not a good combination when it comes to walking straight. Narrowly avoiding landing on our arses, we got to the bar.We were expecting free cocktails, as card holders, but they weren't in evidence, which was a shame - particularly given the drinks were £4.50 each. However, posh Central London venues tend to be overpriced so we let that one slip and relaxed on one of the sofas, admiring the floor show.In the course of an hour, we saw a selection of six foot fetish cupids, looking very funky in their stack heeled boots (particularly impressive given they were toned and tanned men - and men who can walk in heels are rare!) There was a beautiful Oriental girl rollerblading round the dance-floor, her high-cut hotpants showing an arse that would put Kylie to shame. And then came the main event; a choreographed routine with a selection of glamorous men and women.Cake is deliberately designed for women. As such, men are only allowed if invited by a member. However, there were still too many men there - made evident when they all pushed their way to the front to admire the show. Now, blokes attending isn't a big deal - we had a man with us so it would be hypocritical to compain - but we couldn't help but feel that they should all be coralled at the back of the event. After all, men can go to a lapdancing club any night of the week. Events like Cake for women are incredibly rare. And we didn't want them blocking our view! That aside, the floor-show was brilliant; funky music, a distictly decadent feel and someone for everyone (or at least, all of us fancied at least one of the performers.)The crowd is friendly and as the evening went on, was increasingly open. A few women danced topless, clearly not feeling threatened - and even better, without attracting any grief. How many clubs could you say that about? We'll definitely be going to the next event. Overpriced drinks aside, it was a fun evening, very decadent and utterly unlike most nights out. Plus, it's a great excuse to get totally tarted up.Sign up for a Cake card at CakeLondon or CakeNYC if you live in New York.
